Darren Fletcher: United are making their own luck

The crosses which Manchester United's wingers put into the opposition's box are proving vital in their Premier League title bid, according to Darren Fletcher.

The Scotland midfielder was speaking after United drew 1-1 with Aston Villa in the Premier League, a James Collins own goal helping the side bag a point despite them having to play with ten men for over an hour after Nani was sent off.

Collins' mistake was the ninth time United have benefited from an own goal net this season.

Fletcher believes this is no fluke and is actually the result of the great balls his team-mates are putting into the box.

The draw, coupled with Chelsea's 2-1 defeat to Everton on the same night, means that United are now only one point behind the Premier League leaders. Doubtlessly the Red Devils will be hoping they cause chaos in the opposition's penalty area in future games as they look to be the first side to win four titles in a row.

"If you put the ball into the right area it's difficult to defend," said Fletcher.

"If you can whip the ball in between the goalkeeper and the defence there's a chance one of your players can get onto the end of it. If not, it also causes problems for defenders and fortunately they've been knocking them into their own net."

Sir Alex Ferguson said after the Villa game that the red card Nani received for a two-footed tackle was deserved.

However, the manager will now be missing the midfielder, who has been in sparkling form in recent weeks, for three matches.

Nani's suspension could even have an impact on United's
Carling Cup odds as he will miss out on the final.
