Van der Sar crucial to United

Manchester United's aspirations to win the Premier League title are helped by the fact that they have the best goalkeeper in the country.

That is the opinion of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is delighted to have Edwin van der Sar back in his first team after he was forced to miss large chunks of the season.

United were overtaken at the top of the Premier League by West London rivals Chelsea on Wednesday night, meaning they are now one point behind the leaders having played a game more.

Van der Sar has not conceded a goal in the Premier League since he returned earlier this month and is expected play when United face title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates this weekend.

Ferguson said after he saw the Dutchman excel in the Carling Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City that Van der Sar makes "a big difference" to his team.

"I know there are a few young keepers out there doing very well but Edwin is the best in the league just now," said the Scotsman.

"It is not just his saves, it is his composure and use of the ball. It is good to have him back."

Along with praising his goalkeeper, Ferguson has also been quick to praise the contribution of top scorer Wayne Rooney, whom he claimed is "world class".

The England striker has scored 21 goals so far this season and his manager will hope he keeps performing to the high standards he has to date to help United's Premier League title challenge.

Indeed, the presence of these two quality players should be reflected in United's Premier League odds.
