1) Seattle Sounders FC (1): Three weeks in a row at number one for the Sounders. And now a strong grasp of the top spot after downing the MLS-leading Houston Dynamo last weekend. Are there still doubters in this team? 2) Houston Dynamo (3): Despite losing to the Sounders in Seattle last weekend, they played a tough game against a solid home team. 3) Chicago Fire (5): The Fire settled for a tie at home against a struggling Columbus club, but they also jumped into a first-place tie in the East in the process. 4) Chivas USA (2): Perhaps the long layoff between MLS regular season games worked in the opposite way of what it was supposed to; Chivas went goalless at home in a loss to the Galaxy. 5) Los Angeles Galaxy (6): Moving on up in the standings with each passing week, the Galaxy dropped Chivas last week, and hasn’t allowed a goal in three games – all 1-0 victories.
6) Toronto FC (9): Toronto leapfrogged DC United with their impressive 3-1 win on the road at San Jose. They’ll have a hungry Houston team to fend off this weekend. 7) DC United (5): In just a couple weeks, United went from a comfortable lead atop the Eastern Conference to on the brink of being on the outside of the playoff table. They will slip out of playoff position this weekend, should they lose to Colorado. 8) Colorado Rapids (10): Big bounce-back victory against a strong FC Dallas team at home over the weekend kept them in line for the playoffs. 9) Columbus Crew (8): Going into Chicago and getting a point against the Fire allowed them to jump into a tie with DC United at 24 points; and they only sit a point behind Toronto and the aforementioned Fire for the conference lead.
10) Real Salt Lake (7): RSL will need to start picking up their play if they want to make the playoffs. Meanwhile, all other teams fighting for a playoff spot are winning. They take on one of those teams – the Crew in Columbus – this weekend. 11) Kansas City Wizards (11): If you’re a Wizards fan, you have got to think that the season is virtually over when you go into a game against an old, battered New England team and come away with just a point – and no goals. Good luck against the Galaxy in two weeks. 12) FC Dallas (12): Tough loss last weekend, despite a good showing against a feisty Rapids team in Colorado. And it will remain tough going into Utah to take on RSL on July 24. 13) New England Revolution (14): The Revs went another game where they couldn’t put a single shot by the keeper; however, they didn’t allow a goal, and managed a point against KC. 14) New York Red Bulls (15): A week off for the Red Bulls before taking on (and probably losing to) the Galaxy in New York. With San Jose looking sloppy in their outing, it takes them out of this week’s power rankings cellar. 15) San Jose Earthquakes (14): When you have a home game, it shouldn’t matter who you play, you should not be embarrassed. That’s just what the Quakes did last week in a loss to the now-Eastern Conference leading Toronto FC, 3-1. It may be time for the paper-bag-over-the-head fans in the stands.
