After a weekend that saw the Columbus Crew dominate an FC Dallas team (2-0 on August 15) -- the same FCD that beat the Houston Dynamo a week prior (1-0 on August 6) -- coupled with Houston being dominated by, albeit tying, Real Salt Lake (0-0 on August 15), the Crew solidified their spot atop this week's power rankings. Jumping over the Dynamo in their struggles against RSL was the Chicago Fire, which defeated the Kansas City Wizards on the road, 2-0, last weekend. Making the biggest jump this week was Toronto FC, who were able to outlast DC United, 2-0, in Canada. TFC jumped five spots from number 9 last week to number 4; making the largest drop this week were the Los Angeles Galaxy, who lost to a struggling Seattle Sounders FC at home, 2-0, and DC United, with their loss to TFC. Both the Galaxy and United dropped three spots. Here's how the rest of the rankings look:
1) Columbus Crew (1): FC Dallas has been giving fits to many teams in the MLS of late (including a 1-0 win over Houston last week), but they couldn't break the Crew, who now hold a share of the MLS lead in points with Houston (39) after their 2-0 win. Next Week: Off 2) Chicago Fire (3): Impressive victory on the road against a team with a new identity in Kansas City, 2-0. Next Week: 8/19 vs. LA; 8/23 vs. Colorado 3) Houston Dynamo (2): Houston was very lucky to leave Real Salt Lake with a point, tying them 0-0 despite being out-shot 16-3 (8-0 shots on goal). Next Week: 8/23 vs. Seattle 4) Toronto FC (9): Statistically, TFC's 2-0 win over DC United was all-but even. However, they were able to put away their quality chances, allowing them to leapfrog DC in the standings, and looked pretty impressive doing so. And can anyone stop Dwayne De Rosario these days? Next Week: 8/22 @ Chivas 5) Seattle Sounders FC (7): When Seattle met LA last weekend, it was the Galaxy who were on a role and the Sounders who were streaking in the wrong way. So, explaining Seattle's 2-0 victory on the road, where they've have issues all season, is nearly inexplicable. Next Week: 8/20 vs. New England; 8/23 @ Houston 6) Colorado Rapids (6): Colorado took a week away from MLS play. It couldn't have come at a better time, as they prep for a solid Fire team on Sunday -- the Fire's second game in five days. Next Week: 8/23 @ Chicago 7) Los Angeles Galaxy (4): Perhaps the Galaxy thought that the Sounders were just handing teams games when they traveled to the oppositions stadiums. I guess they didn't get the memo that each team earned their win against the Sounders, even if it came easy. Next Week: 8/19 @ Chicago; 8/22 @ DC 8) DC United (5): Tough loss on the road to TFC despite playing them even most the match. They'll need to do better in putting the ball in the back of the net if they hope to make it to the post season and beyond. Next Week 8/22 vs. LA
9) New England Revolution (8): With at least three games in hand on all the teams in front of them, they still have a glimmer of hope to sneak their way into the post season. But, still, this team doesn't have much of a chance with the starting 11 they utilize right now. Next Week: 8/20 @ Seattle; 8/23 vs. RSL 10) Real Salt Lake (11): Earning a tie against one of the league's best in Houston is a great feat. However, taking 16 shots and not scoring is anything but. Next Week: 8/23 @ New England 11) Chivas USA (13): OK, so they aren't one of the worst teams in the league, as they made beating New York look easy (2-0 @ New York last week). They are still far from one of the elites in the MLS. Next Week: 8/22 vs. Toronto 12) FC Dallas (10): FCD shouldn't hang their heads low after losing to one of, if not the hottest teams in the league right now. Especially playing on the road against the Crew. Next Week: 8/23 @ New York 13) San Jose Earthquakes (12): San Jose had been playing better until their hiccup against the Crew a little over a week ago. Things should get back on track as they take on Kansas City at home this weekend. Next Week: 8/22 vs. Kansas City 14) Kansas City Wizards (15): Rough first outing for Interim Head Coach Peter Vermes, losing to Chicago, 2-0, at home last week. Their competition will come down considerably as they travel to San Jose to take on the Earthquakes this weekend; but the Quakes are playing better ball and could present a tough challenge. You would think Vermes has his squad prepared. Next Week: 8/22 @ San Jose 15) New York Red Bulls (14): No more giving the Red Bulls sympathy placings in the power rankings. Even when teams hit rock bottom (Chivas, KC and San Jose to name a few), they still aren't half as bad as this team. Next Week: 8/23 vs. FC Dallas
